The edTPA™ assessment process being implemented in Minnesota has a long and rich history of research and innovation behind it.
Stanford University faculty and staff at Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning and Equity (SCALE) developed edTPA. They received substantive advice and feedback from teachers and teacher educators, and drew from experience gained over 25 years of research and history developing performance-based assessments of teaching (including the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium Standards portfolio and the Performance Assessment for California Teachers).
While the research base for edTPA will grow over time as teacher candidates complete the process and enter the classroom, there already is sufficient agreement in the field that teacher performance assessments aligned with standards (such as National Board Certification assessments) improve teacher performance and predict their future students’ achievement gains. Additionally, the teaching skills evaluated by edTPA have been shown to help improve student learning.
Minnesota and other states implementing edTPA will collect data and study the effectiveness of edTPA specifically and performance assessment in general.
