The adoption of edTPA™ represents one of the most significant additions to the recent changes to teacher preparation in Minnesota. All Minnesota teacher preparation programs will use edTPA beginning with the 2012-13 school year. This transition will mark the culmination of a four-year process of study and collaboration by the Minnesota Board of Teaching and the Minnesota Association for Colleges of Teacher Education with national experts, plus extensive field testing, to identify and implement a performance assessment that can be used to gauge the readiness of teacher candidates.

Many states are moving toward statewide use of edTPA and dozens of institutions of higher education across the country are using the assessment process. But with our implementation statewide in 2013-14, Minnesota becomes a leader in moving beyond subject-matter tests to performance assessment as a powerful way to assess the preparation of teacher candidates in critical areas that have been shown to improve student achievement.

Throughout this transition and beyond, preparation programs, teacher candidates, teachers and school administrators will share their experiences and lessons as a way to help educate others about overcoming challenges of implementation and how to make full use of edTPA data.
